Rotana hotels in the UAE joined millions around the world by taking part in the global campaign, Earth Hour 2012, in an initiative to raise awareness among employees, guests and the wider public of the continued importance of consuming global resources sensibly, saving more than 56,000 kilowatts in one hour. Considered to be an integral part of Rotana’s Corporate Social Responsibility plan, Earth Hour was celebrated at Rotana through a variety of activities such as turning off the lights in restaurants and car parks, turning off electric appliances, refraining from changing bed linen and towels on the day, in addition to the unique cycling activity held at Beach Rotana to generate power and produce electricity. Organized by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour began in 2007 as a single-city initiative in Sydney, Australia to raise awareness and take action on climate change, and has quickly evolved to become a global environmental movement held on the last Saturday of every March.
